Well I started this week out by chairing our Annual Congregational Meeting at Centenary-Queen Square United Church. I am the chair of the congregation for this United Church in the South End of Saint John. I was not raised in a religious atmosphere but began attending on my own several years ago. I chose CQS United Church because of its focus on social justice issues and its acceptance of everyone, including homosexuals. It has been a great experience. The congregation is growing when most are not and I believe this is due to its inclusive policies. I would recommend attending a service if you are looking for a open-minded place of worship.
I attended Common Council on Monday night as the "Heritage Bylaw Review Committee" I was part of was making their recommendations to Council. Well it turns out the some other contentious issues were also being discussed. I did not get into the chambers for an hour due to fire regulations (i.e. it was already packed with people). Protesters of the pipeline through Rockwood Park had taken over. The Homeless Women's Shelter and a made in Saint John film were also on the docket. It was a little crazy to say the least but at least people were exercising their right to have their opinion heard. Hopefully they were doing it in a peaceful manner.
Unfortunately the week took a turn for the worse when I heard of Dominick Eden's passing. I knew Dominick quite well as we crossed paths quite a bit while fighting similar issues in the community. I am not even going to attempt to write down all my thoughts here, but will say it saddened me very much. He was a wonderful person who did many wonderful things for those who needed help. Too many to mention here! He will be greatly missed but never forgotten as he has left a legacy in this community. I will always remember him.
I spent Tuesday night in Fredericton as I was guest on "Crosby Live". We had a great discussion around "Life as a gay man in N.B.". All calls to the show were very positive and this has renewed my hope that our province is moving forward. Thanks to all the callers and to Rich Crosby for spreading the education.
This Saturday I am off to UNBSJ to be a guest speaker at the 2nd Annual Graduate Students Symposium. I am to talk on "Life after Graduate School". Wow, that is a loaded question......should I talk about the exodus of our youth............going into the real world.........paying off your student debt for years.........finding a job.............starting a life???? I guess I will figure it out.
Well I am off to do some reading. I hope everyone is well!
